Nicholas was born August 2, 1990, to proud parents Lionel and Julia Lopez. He began attending school when he was five years old. On his very first day, he cried the whole time, until his teacher helped him take off his shoes. That afternoon, the teacher explained to Nicholas' parents that he should have been able to tell her that his shoes were uncomfortable. She suggested they take Nicholas to his pediatrician and ask about autism.
"I had never heard the word 'autism'” admitted Julia. "I had no idea what that meant." Nicholas’ pediatrician recommended they see a Neurologist. After a six week wait, his blood work results were normal. Relieved but unsure of what to do next, Julia and Lionel decided they would just take things one day at a time.
It was soon recommended by his teachers and principal to have Nicholas repeat Kindergarten and be placed in Special Education classes. This is often difficult for parents to accept, but it was the best decision for Nicholas. He was blessed with outstanding teachers throughout his school years. His family beamed with pride when he graduated high school in 2010.
Along the way, Nicholas discovered a love for drawing, especially cartoon characters. He began using his finger to draw in the dirt in his grandparents' carport every afternoon. His favorite subjects to draw include Sonic the Hedgehog, Garfield, and the Looney Tunes bunch. As he got older, Nicholas would draw on his grandfather’s dirty car rear window. His grandfather was always so proud to drive around town showing off Nicholas' drawings!
These days, Nicholas spends two days a week at his mother's print shop and looks forward to his occasional adventures at Main Event, the zoo, and several other favorite spots. Much of his time, however, is spent playing video games, drawing, and watching TV. "We want more for him," his mother relents. "We want his days to be filled with interesting activities and learning opportunities. We want him to feel and be independent."
This desire to enrich Nicholas' life is the seed from which Palmetto will grow. So many special needs adults will benefit from this life skills facility, and we intend to make it happen!
